Irony.
It's funny how sometimes you get a huge change of view when you move away from something. For me, I moved away from having any writing influence from other people--in terms of people I work with directly. Days like yesterday--deadline days--make me realize I have to step up and know what I'm talking about, since I'm the only source here. People call me from all over the company asking about company style guidelines and such information. And I have to know it.
There are also times when I have to step up into the managing-freelance-writers role and tell people how things are. Sometimes that can be hard, but I'm learning to come out of it.
But if there's one thing I'm grateful for about my job, it's the fact that I don't quite have an expertise yet, so when I'm asked to stretch my abilities and try something new, I can do it. I'm now tried marketing, brochure, advertisement, editorial, and interview writing. I've also been able to edit a wide range of materials as well. (Seriously, I never thought I'd have to write ads. I thought that was left up for ad copywriters like David. :)
[By this point a real writer would ask me, "What is your call to action? Why did you write this blog entry?" I would respond... um...?]
