Marketing 101: Proof Your Work

A direct-mail effort to boost business at a New Mexico Honda dealership looks like it might have the opposite effect. The AP is reporting that Roswell Honda contracted with an Atlanta-based direct marketing company to prepare instant-win scratch-off tickets, which it then sent to area residents as part of a promotion. Lucky for the residents—but not so lucky for the dealership—every ticket was a $1,000 winner.

All 50,000 of them.

"Unfortunately, they missed it in the proofreading," said the dealership’s general manager--in what might be the understatement of the year. Reps from Force Events Direct Marketing were reported en route to Roswell to sort out the mess. Meanwhile, the names, addresses and phone numbers of "winners" who arrived at the dealership were being taken down. Wonder if Force Events has an extra $50 million laying around?
