I was feeling pretty good yesterday before my class, so I decided to go on a little book research project through the library. Actually, I was taking on a secret classified mission that only special people know about and I needed the library to do it. But now that I'm into bookbinding, I am paying more attention to what books are made out of and the style they are bound in.
The second floor brought a huge surprise: there is no longer the giant computer lab in room 2260 HBLL. That is a little weird. The room is full of books! For a moment I wondered where I was. The north wall has been knocked out to combine the room with the Family History Library. Interesting.
Anyway, I ended up picking out three books and checking them out. I didn't even look to see what the text was in the books. I was mainly looking at books with interesting cover styles, letter press, covers with no letter press, etc. Here's what I picked out.
Compendium of Astronomy; containing the elements of the science, familiarity explained and illustrated, with the latest discoveries adapted to the use of schools and academies, and of the general reader. (Yes that is the entire title.) Published 1854 in New York but has a rebound cover.Yeah, not books I would have picked out due to content...
There is but one individual: A religion for today's world.Published in North Carolina; 1961. Original cover.
Wild Ivy: The spiritual autobiography of Zen Master Hakuin. Published in Boston & London, 1999. Original cover.
