For the past week I've been trying to think about what I want to do with my life. Here are a few problems.
I'm in a technical writing master's program. I'm planning to graduate in April. (Yay!) However, I don't want to be a hard-core technical writer. As I told a girl in my ward/class last night at FHE, I have all the skills of a technical communicator, not necessarily a writer. (And most people are thinking, what's the difference? The difference is that we learn about design and layout, usability testing, theory, online teaching and other fun stuff that relate to technology and/or could benefit from straight-forward comprehension.)
I like my job right now because I now have experience in a variety of things. However, my job still feels limited. I want credit for responsibilities I'm given. I want to help develop ideas instead of just being asked to carry them out. I want to feel like I'm making a difference instead of merely coming to work every day. And, I would like to be paid what I'm worth. That's probably the biggest concern right now. I realize the economy is holding us back, and I do appreciate having a job, but the economy can't be the excuse forever.
I'm afraid of getting too comfortable and then never getting the courage to do something different, if an opportunity shows up.
